I heard you have to have a real project to work on to get certified. Is there any point trying to take the online courses vs. the in class training then?
This would be an appropriate question to post on isixsigma.com. There are dozens of certifying companies out there and for all of them that I know of, yes, you will need to complete a project for certification. Go to the website above and poke around a little bit, or ask the question on one of the forums.
